Abstract

VOCGEN by Environment & Power Systems International are small scale, highly robust, simple cycle industrial gas turbine power generators that provide 560 kilowatts of electricity and 6.5 million Btu high quality waste heat each hour of operation.

VOCGEN gas turbines operate on primary pilot fuels, typically natural gas, and voc-laden process air emissions used as secondary fuel. Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions are generated in fuel storage and transfer operations and various processes that use hydrocarbon solvents in manufacturing, petrochemical and synthetic organic chemical manufacturing industries (SOCMI).

A single genset can manage 6,200 cubic feet per minute (CFM) voc-laden emissions at ISO conditions; 15 deg C (59 deg F) ambient temperature; 60% relative humidity; and ambient pressure at sea level.

Multiple gensets sharing a common inlet air ductwork or header can manage larger air volumes, or voc concentrator technology can be used to reduce air volumes and increase concentrations of voc, which can be managed by one or two gensets.

Overall system energy efficiencies are up to 90% with carbon emission reductions over 50%.

Cost benefit analyses typically result in $450K to over $1 million (USD) in annual operational cost savings.  This is achieved when applied as industrial air pollution control systems and the generated electricity and waste heat offset part of the utility-provided energy requirements of the facility.

Additional operational cost savings are possible if the equipment is synchronous and/or black start capable, eliminating standby and backup diesel generators typically deployed at the user's facility.

VOCGEN CHP systems replace existing air pollution control equipment subject to Clean Air Act Title V Operating Permits including carbon adsorption, direct flame and regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO).

Our gensets are skid-mounted, portable environmental enclosures designed to build scalable air pollution control and combined heat and power (APC/CHP) systems for industrial applications.

If your management team is planning to replace a VOC destruct thermal oxidizer or regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO), request a Level 1 Feasibility Analysis and let's work together to evaluate the potential to lower your facility's operating costs.

Executive Summary

VOCGEN is an energy efficient solution for EPA-regulated industries. Think combined heat and power (CHP) economics plus the elimination of the life cycle costs associated with traditional VOC air pollution control equipment.

The additional work output (voc destruction) by the gas turbine produces an enhanced economic model, resulting in greater energy operational cost savings compared to the standard CHP economic model.  A simple return on investment period for a vocgen chp system is typically less than 2 years.

Our approach to the VOCGEN niche market is a side by side comparison of capital and operational costs between a VOCGEN CHP system and the user's existing air pollution control system. Request a project questionnaire and we will work with you to complete a Level 1 Feasibility Assessment.

VOCGEN CHP technology is a comprehensive solution for the manufacturing, petrochemical and synthetic organic chemical manufacturing industries (SCOMI) subject to Clean Air Act Title V operating permits for major sources.

Industrial users within these categories will realize a value proposition that offers a significant cost savings potential.  This is acheived by replacing traditional air pollution control equipment with VOCGEN CHP.

Gas turbine VOC abatement systems are highly reliable, off-the-shelf technology that provides the user a substantial increase in energy operational cost savings via energy efficiency with the added benefit of a short-term return on capital investment.

Technology Summary

VOCGEN is an industrial gas turbine integrated with a patented combustion chamber designed to thermally oxidize volatile organic compounds (VOC). The utilization of high heat content (Btu) opportunity fuel(s) in additon to natural gas for the operation of a gas turbine generator results in energy efficient cogeneration and the abatement of EPA regulated air emissions.

Our waste to energy technology results in a significant economic solution for EPA regulated industries by way of reduced or "offset" costs for 1) air pollution control equipment; 2) purchased grid power; and 3) purchased fuels for heating and cooling of processes and buildings.

VOCGEN CHP systems provide the user efficient, independent and reliable on site energy security for industry. Our systems additionally reduce carbon emissions; eliminate the life cycle costs associated with traditional pollution control systems; replace standby power and demand response power requirements; and increase profitability and competitveness.

Design & Performance

The VOCGEN gas turbine oxidizer (GTO) is a high performance volatile organic compound thermal destruct device proven to deliver 97% - 99.99% combustion efficiency (CE) when addressing voc emissions generated from printing; coating; pharmacuetical; petrochemical; semi-conductor; expandable polystryene; bulk gasoline storage and transport; and many other manufacturing, petrochemical and SOCM industries.

Advanced Controls:

  • The patented voc combustion chamber and gas turbine can manage highly variable loading rates (pounds per hour) by applying high temperatures and pressure

  • The engine controls can automaticly adjust voc combustion temperatures to address various voc species and their destruct temperature requirements when fitted-out with a photoionization detector

  • Monitoring the exhaust gas temperture of the gas turbine engine, the genset onboard controls instantly adjust pilot fuel requirements, allowing the inlet air voc to be efficiently applied as a contributing fuel source.

VOCGEN Air Pollution Control Application:

  • Ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, alkanes, aromatics and glycol ethers.

  • Chlorinated compounds are prohibited, or must be pretreated.

  • Waste streams that are too hot for efficient power generation or that contain corrosives, sulfur compounds including hydrogen sulfides, and salts, etc., must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for pretreatment conditioning.
  • Inlet air cooling and particulate filtration is standard. In some cases water scrubbers and voc concentrator technology are applied in the system design.

Portable generator packages are available in either certified or non-certified ISO containers for easy transport and setup including quick connection on site. Features include, but not limited to sound attenuation, weather protection, fire suppression, safety interlock doors and panels; interior cooling and lighting; and network monitoring w/computer interface.

Pilot Fuel

The engine is fuel flexible and capable of operation on a variety of gaseous and liquid fuels. Natural gas is standard.
